The Spice Melange
The Spice Melange is the most precious entity in existence. The control of the sole source it can be extracted from is the most sought after CHOAM Contract and almost guarantees wealth and fame to a successful holder. Melange also has a number of practical effects, as well as drawbacks, which this document will outline.
Consumption of Spice
By consuming one unit of melange a given piece of personnel or battalion may add (+2 Att / +2 Def, +5 HP) for one turn. This process must be repeated each turn to maintain the bonus. Any battalion or piece of personnel who uses the Melange Consumption bonus two turns consecutively is considered "addicted". So long as the addiction rules are followed the addicted unit may continue to enjoy the consumption bonus. Addiction may be avoided by interruption of consumption. IE: Consumption Bonus in T4, No bonus in T5, Bonus in T6 prevents addiction whereas Consumption bonus in T4, Consumption bonus in T5 leads to addiction.
Spice Addiction
If the spice consumption bonus is used two turns consecutively the unit becomes addicted. Addicted personnel and battalions must consume half a unit of melange to prevent the loss of -10 HP per turn until either they consume melange again or die. To achieve the consumption bonus addicted units and troops must consume double the normal amount of melange, meaning an addicted battalion or piece of personnel requires 2.5 units of melange to achieve the consumption bonus.
Resource Uses
Aside from consumption bonuses spice is required for planetary consumption (outlined in the Game Economics document), as well as the purchase and upgrade of certain personnel. The sellers of these personnel will indicate if they require melange for payment.
It is also required for the construction of Heighliners.
